A New Chapter for Earth Lagoon Mývatn
Following an extensive period of development, new facilities, an expanded lagoon and a wider range of experiences now await guests at Earth Lagoon Mývatn.
Earth Lagoon Mývatn is entering a new chapter with the opening of a beautiful new facility, offering guests new ways to experience the geothermal waters, natural surroundings and bathing traditions of the Lake Mývatn area.
The development has been extensive and carefully considered. From the beginning, the goal has been clear: to create a modern, welcoming and high-quality facility that preserves the unique character of the destination and strengthens its connection to the surrounding landscape.
The new building has been designed in close harmony with its environment. Materials excavated during construction have been reused throughout the building, including in the roof, roof edges, interior and exterior finishes, and flooring. Wherever possible, the architecture has been shaped around existing lava walls and natural formations, from the route leading guests towards the changing rooms to specially designed spaces within the building.
“We did not want to create something that stood apart from the landscape. We wanted the new facility to feel as though it had grown from its surroundings and to reflect the earth, steam, water and lava that make the Lake Mývatn area so unique,” says Guðmundur Þór Birgisson, Managing Director.
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of three different admission options: Earth Essential, Earth Signature and Earth Exclusive. Guests can now choose the experience that best suits their visit, whether they are looking for a simple and relaxing soak, an enhanced experience with additional services, or a quieter and more personal stay.
The lagoon itself also plays an expanded role in the experience. Its blue, mineral-rich geothermal water remains at the heart of Earth Lagoon Mývatn, while a new section of the lagoon has been designed around a natural fissure and inspired by the surrounding landscape, including Grjótagjá and Stóragjá. Guests can move through fissure-like passages, explore caves connecting different areas of the lagoon and relax in new hot pools with panoramic views across the Lake Mývatn region.
A new swim-up bar will also form part of the experience. Another major addition is a new steam facility designed as a geothermal steam cave. It continues a centuries-old local tradition, as the people of the Lake Mývatn area have used natural geothermal steam for bathing and relaxation for generations.
“This is a major change for both us and our guests. We are preserving everything people have always loved about the destination while adding more space, greater comfort and new experiences that will make each visit even more memorable,” says Guðmundur Þór Birgisson, Managing Director.
The new facility will also introduce massage treatments for the first time at Earth Lagoon Mývatn. Guests will be able to book a massage whether or not they are visiting the lagoon, offering even more ways to enjoy relaxation and wellbeing in the Lake Mývatn area.
With these changes, Earth Lagoon Mývatn is becoming more than a larger and more spacious bathing destination. It is evolving into a complete geothermal experience for travellers and local residents who wish to connect with Icelandic nature, wellbeing and bathing culture in a truly distinctive setting.
