A Tradition of Relaxation

For generations, the people of Mývatn have turned to geothermal steam and water for rest and renewal. At Earth Lagoon, that tradition lives on in a peaceful, modern setting. Soak in mineral-rich waters surrounded by lava fields and mountains — just as locals have done for centuries. Steam bathing here is even mentioned in the Icelandic Sagas, celebrated as a timeless ritual of healing.

THE LAGOON

Naturally Alkaline. Rich in Minerals.

The geothermal water comes from the Bjarnaflag borehole, operated by the National Power Company, and arrives at the lagoon at around 130°C. It’s then cooled to a comfortable 36–40°C. The water is naturally alkaline, rich in sulfur, and completely free of chlorine or added disinfectants. In total, the lagoon and surrounding basin circulate approximately 3.5 million liters of geothermal water.

Getting Ready for Your Soak

To help keep the water clean and the experience peaceful for everyone, please take a moment to prepare before your soak.

  • Step 1 - Rent if Needed

Don’t worry if you forget something — we offer towel, swimsuit, and bathrobe rentals at the front desk. These can be added to your booking or arranged on arrival.

  • Step 2 - Use the Changing Rooms

Our changing rooms can accommodate up to 630 guests. The layout is designed for easy flow and privacy, with individual showers, lockers, and vanity spaces. Staff are always nearby if you need assistance or have questions.

  • Step 3 - Remove your Jewelry

We recommend removing silver or copper jewelry before your visit. The geothermal water is naturally rich in sulfur, which can cause discoloration or tarnish. Lockers are available in the changing rooms to safely store your belongings.

  • Step 4 - Freshen Up

All guests are required to shower thoroughly before entering the lagoon. This is a long-standing part of Icelandic bathing culture and helps keep the water clean and safe for everyone. Shower facilities are located in our changing rooms, and we provide body wash,  shampoo and conditioner for your use.

  • Step 5 - Enjoy Local Luxuries

We provide Icelandic-made body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. These are gentle on skin and hair, especially after bathing in mineral-rich geothermal water.
